Norway’s Gambling Authority Now Targets Illegal Online Ads & Streams
In 2001, Norway established its Gambling Authority, Lottstift, to oversee state and privately controlled gaming activities, ensuring strict adherence to regulations. Recently, Lottstift announced a firm stance against social media platforms that allow the promotion of online gambling through live streams and related content. Norway enforces a comprehensive ban on gambling advertisements, with the Broadcasting Act prohibiting any gambling-related promotions outside of the state’s monopolies, Rikstoto and Norsk Tipping, which focus on racing, betting, and lottery services.
Lottstift has initiated action against Schpell.com for broadcasting content that includes Norwegian influencers promoting online casino games, violating Norwegian law. These illegal promotions were disseminated through Schpell.com and captured on platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and Kick. Lottstift reminded these platforms about the nation’s advertising restrictions and has leveraged the revised Money Gambling Act to demand Schpell.com, operated by Tiergarten Marketing Ltd, stop all promotional activities in Norway.
The authority also issued cease-and-desist notices to Baris Entertainment AS and Viken Underholdning AS, companies linked to social media influencers engaged in illegal gambling promotions. They were given until February 20 to halt these activities or face fines and penalties for non-compliance.
Lottstift is stepping up its monitoring efforts, especially on social media, to ensure compliance with Norway’s strict advertising rules. Monica Alisøy Kjelsnes, the director of Lottstift, highlighted concerns over live streams by influencers targeting young audiences with promotions for unlicensed casinos. Despite some influencers ceasing illegal gambling promotions, others are close to crossing the legal boundary. Lottstift plans more inspections to maintain regulatory compliance and safeguard Norwegian consumers from unregulated gambling activities.
