Rapid River softball swept by Norway
RAPID RIVER — It was a tough day on the diamond for Rapid River softball as it dropped a pair of games, 20-0 and 20-7, to Norway on Tuesday.
The Knights put up 12 runs in the second inning of the first game. Liz Romitti hit a two-run single that put Norway up 4-0. Emma Dube hit a two RBI single to extend the lead to 7-0.
“It was good for us to pick up the conference win today,” Norway coach Robert Bal said. “Both teams played fundamentally well and Rapid River did a good job of throwing strikes and they are definitely an improving team.”
Romitti came through with a double for her second hit of the inning that brought in another run. Jordan Moln hit a two-run double and the Knights led 13-0 after two innings.
Norway added seven more runs in the third inning highlighted by a single by Romitti her third hit of the game that brought in two more runs. Romitti had five RBIs and scored three runs in the contest.
The Knights jumped out to 13-0 lead after the first inning of game two highlighted by a two-run double by Tessa Castelaz and a grand slam by Torri Cooper.
The Rockets got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on a three-run homer by Saylor Carlson.
“The home run felt good,” Carlson said. “We knew we had to bring a better effort in game two and I feel we played better as a team in the second game.”
The Knights added four in the second inning, scoring three of those off miscues by the Rockets.
The Rockets trailed 19-5 after three innings. Eighth grade pitcher Zoey Fuller sent the Knights three up three down in the top of the fourth.
“It really helps build her confidence,” Rockets coach Joe Smith said. “She just started pitching last week and for her to be able to come out and do that tonight definitely gave the team a spark.”
The Rockets added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run hit by Victoria Coppoch.
